His Name

“Ascribe to the Lord, O mighty ones, Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name; Worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness.”

Psalm 29:1-2

Have you ever considered the names of our God? I once sent an email that asked my friends and family to list as many of them as they could without fudging and looking them up in Scripture. It is amazing to consider the number of them. Even more amazing are the meanings behind each one.

The earliest record of God's name is found inscribed on ancient stones in the Holy Land and is simply the symbol "L". We know He spoke His name to the patriarchs
. "Moses said to God, 'Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, "The God of your fathers has sent me to you," and they ask me, "What is His name?" Then what shall I tell them?' God said to Moses, 'I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites. 'I AM has sent me to you.' " Exodus 13,14 (NIV)

The Jews consider the Lord's name so sacred and fear offending Him to the point of not speaking His name. They even go so far as to not print His name in its entirety, rather, write it as "G-d". But we take comfort in knowing His most precious name - Jesus. And as He illustrated in Scripture, when He was before Caiaphas and the council of leaders before condemning Him, "They all asked, 'Are you then the Son of God?' He replied, 'You are right in saying I AM.' " He declared His divinity, incensing them, and they accused Him of blasphemy and placed Him on the cross. (Luke 22:70 NIV)

His Name is to be revered and honored. His Name speaks of a multitude of love, grace, peace and comfort. There is not enough space on this blog to list them all for He is the compilation of all things eternal and He is worthy of our worship and adoration. I have listed a few of them, but if you have any others you would like to add, please do so!
